When the door closes: a poem by Melissa Arris

There is never so sweet a time
As when the lights are low
And the door closes
And I strip off the coverings of day
Taking off strength, integrity, honor
When I am laid bare before Him
The King of my heart
Never closer
After the writhing
And the sweating
The toil of bearing my soul
My nakedness exposed
Fully seen
Fully known
Oh, to rest in the stillness
And be held by you
As you whisper sweet promises
To my unquenchable heart
And in the morning
You are still with me
And again, I put on my armor
To battle the day
But my thoughts
They will be on you
My jealous love
My soul pants for you
To be in the secret place
Where you will fill me again
And I will be one with you
In perfect love
That never runs dry
You are the fire
And the quenching
There is no other
Only you
